If you’ve recently purchased a new four wheeler, you may be feeling a bit out of your element. These vehicles aren’t similar to cars, motorcycles, or even a majority of off-road vehicles currently on the market and, as a result, can take a little practice to learn how to drive. Thankfully, we’ve written up the helpful tips below to ensure you get the hang of your models’ unique controls in as little time as possible.

Learn The Controls

Before you gear up or start your engine, we recommend taking a moment to familiarize yourself with your four wheeler’s controls. While all four wheelers will have basic controls such as a shifter, accelerator, and brakes, whether these controls appear as levers, switches or pedals will vary from model to model. As a result, we recommend taking a look through your owner’s manual to ensure you know where all of your important controls are, and how to work them. Once you’re familiar enough with your four wheeler’s equipment to grab and adjust your controls without looking at them, you’re ready to start your engine.

Take It Slow

While you may be tempted to rev your engine and speed off the first time you start your four wheeler’s engine, we strongly recommend against it. Four wheelers are powerful vehicles, and beginners are often ill-prepared for how quickly they can accelerate in just a matter of seconds. To avoid an accident or rollover, take things slowly. Practice starting and stopping your vehicle in a straight line, slowly moving into turns once you’ve got the hang of your model’s acceleration. Once you’ve got these basics down, you’re welcome to try some small inclines or hills to practice shifting your four wheeler.
