Your all-terrain vehicle is designed to handle a huge variety of terrain types, from wet to dry and from compact to loose. But one way you can make your ATV more suitable for certain conditions is to select the right set of tires to put on it for your rides. You’ll get improved performance and better handling when you select tires that best suit your riding needs.

Cycles of Jacksonville is your Florida ATV dealership. Read on to learn more about the different types of ATV tires available on the market and how they can help you to conquer different types of terrain.

All-Terrain

The most common type of ATV tire which is installed at the factory on pretty much every quad is the all-terrain tire. These wheels are designed to be suitable for a range of conditions, so they’re not tailored to any particular type of terrain. Certain types of all-terrain tires may perform better for some things than others, like those with better traction or wet riding conditions. You’ll always want to keep your standard all-terrain wheels on hand for general off-roading and recreational trail-riding purposes

Sand

A common powersports pastime is sand dune riding. This involves taking your ATV over loose sand, which will necessitate an entirely different style of tire than the all-terrain wheels. If you want to ride your ATV along the beach, you’re going to need this type of tire, which is equipped with paddle-style ridges that can provide improved traction over looser material. If you try to ride along the coast or over dunes with standard tires, you may find that your quad sinks into the material and may even get stuck. Paddle tires work similarly to a water wheel in how they push sand down and back from your tires to provide you with better traction and prevent your vehicle from sinking.

The only caveat with this type of tire is that you cannot use it on hard-packed terrain. The paddle ridges will quickly disintegrate if driven over a firm trail or pavement, rendering your sand tires utterly useless. Make sure to bring your all-terrain tires with you if you plan to switch to another terrain type after riding on sand.

Mud

Finally, we have mud tires. These wheels are designed for wet, sticky riding conditions, which is why they provide you with superior traction. These tires generally have knobby protrusions that will grip terrain deeply and prevent you from sliding around or sinking into it. Mud tires are ideal for any riding that will be done over uneven and wet ground. In fact, you can even make use of mud tires for slushy or snowy conditions, so if you like to ride your ATV up north where it’s snowy, you can make use of the knobby mud tires to gain better traction. Your weight distribution will be more even as well, which will help prevent slippage as you ride.

These are the three primary types of tires for your quad, but there are a few more options out there for less-common issues like snow tires or wheels specifically designed for racing. You can talk to the staff here at Cycles of Jacksonville about what options may best suit your needs.
