The History
Piaggio & Co. S.p.A. of Pontedera, Italy, is the parent company of Vespa, which was engaged in wartime production until the end of WWII. After their plane plant was demolished by bombing during the war, the company sought a new product to stay in business. Enrico Piaggio, son of founder Rinaldo Piaggio, thought about creating an affordable transportation option, and that’s how the idea of Vespa scooters came into being.
The Iconic Vespa® Design
The creative engineers at Piaggio designed a prototype machine, which had an engine mounted next to the rear wheel. This design eliminated the drive chain, allowing direct drive from the transmission. It also created the revolutionary step-through design with a foot platform and a front wind guard. This made the prototype more popular among the women who mostly wore dresses and skirts at that time.
The Wasp
Vespa means wasp in both Italian and Latin. Enrico Piaggio gave the prototype the name who thought it resembled the insect when he first saw it. They launched Vespa scooters in 1946, which continues to rule the market even today.
