Starting Out
First things first: only experienced riders should consider venturing into the world of ATV racing. Even beginner-level races are designed for riders with hundreds of hours of practice. Your first step to becoming a serious contender is to get out there and practice!
Even if you have your sights set on drag racing, tackling a variety of terrain in your ATV is a great way to learn how your vehicle handles, practice taking tight turns, and test your endurance. Part of the goal of practicing is to build up forearm strength - you’ll need that muscle on the racetrack!
Entering Races
In order to join ATV races, first you’ll need to become a member of the All-Terrain Vehicle Association (ATVA). Your vehicle will also need some adjustments to be racetrack-ready: a kill switch, nerf bars, and rear number plates are all mandatory. You’ll probably also want to upgrade your tires, wheels, and exhaust to improve your ATV’s performance.
When you’re ready for the big time, ATVA can point you to upcoming races in your area. There are several different kinds of races available. Some involve laps, and some (like drag races) are on flat tracks. Others are oriented toward stunt driving. Race organizers usually provide trial runs at the track, giving you the opportunity to fine-tune your vehicle to suit the terrain.
Whatever kind of racing you choose to pursue, be prepared to make lots of new friends - races can have as many 1800 competitors!
Tips and Tricks
- Learn from the Pros: Guidance and feedback from a more experienced rider can help you identify your weaknesses and correct any flaws in your technique. Seek out classes in your area, or ask for one-on-one help from an established racer.
- Enhance Your Ride: Special tires and suspension adjustment are important alterations you’ll need to be competitive on the racetrack. The HMF Competition Series exhaust system is another smart investment, enhancing performance while reducing noise.
- Stay in Shape: Serious competitors take their ATVs out for practice several times per week, and maintain a strict fitness routine that includes plenty of cardio and strength training. All that and a balanced diet will keep you in peak racing form!
- Give and Take: Learning to “give and take” those corners is the most critical technique for making headway on the racetrack - this means decelerating into a turn to gain better vehicle control, then accelerating out of it.
- Maintain Your Machine: Your racing ATV will need regular servicing to stay in top shape, and it’s best to find a mechanic who’s familiar with racing vehicles.
