245There are arguments aplenty for why you should ride your ATV on a trail instead of off-roading. Predictability and the freedom to maneuver are two of the main reasons why trail riding is the best way to test how powerful your quad is.

If you’re the new kid on the block, don’t worry: we’ve got you covered! If you’re new to riding ATVs or simply looking for a head-start, here’s a list of things that you need to keep in mind.

Wear Protective Clothing

The most sensible thing to do is to invest in some protective gear and clothing for your ATV adventure. Before you head for the trails, a helmet, goggles, boots and riding clothes are an absolute must. Whether its rough weather or a freak accident, your gear and clothing are what protect you from severe injury.

It’s better to be safe than sorry. So what are the essential tools that you can carry with you on your ATV adventure? A wrench that fits your ATV’s bolt size, a knife, fire starter, flashlight, rain poncho, extra gas can, water, snacks, a map, compass, GPS, and a flat tire patch kit. These are the little things which could keep you safe and secure when blazing a trail!

A pre-ride Inspection

Conduct a thorough inspection of your ATV before embarking on an adventure. A little extra caution never hurt anyone. It’s better to catch mechanical glitches in the security of your own home than on the road. Check your tires, inspect the chain for any links that might be worn down and if you come across any more complex issues make sure to seek the services of our professional mechanics in our Service Department.

A riding buddy is always a great idea even if you like keeping to yourself. Negotiating trails alone comes with its own set of risks. Riding with a partner or a group is an added safety measure and an awesome one at that!

Respect The Riding Area

Don’t let your appetite for risk get the better of you. Even on a thrilling adventure, there are certain boundaries to be heeded and respected. Going off the trail can damage the ecosystem and pose a threat to the flora and fauna of the area. There’s a reason the trail was built where it is. Keep in mind the plants and wildlife as well as hidden hazards like potholes and dips that can be incredibly dangerous, even lethal.

Nature is majestic and it is in our interest to keep it pristine and clean. Don’t litter or leave anything behind when you stop to have a snack or fix up your ATV. Take the trash with you and clean up any spilled fluids. And don’t hesitate to pick up cans or wrappers left by less scrupulous riders. You know you’re the bigger person here.

Be Alert At All Times

When taming the untamed, be alert and vigilant. Complacence and the conviction that you just won’t get lost is downright foolhardy. Some trails are winding and have many forks in the road, you could easily take a wrong turn that leaves you confused. A map of the area and a compass are non-negotiable when trail blazing! Your phone or GPS could be a lifesaver too but getting a signal might be a problem in remote areas. Be mindful of what direction you’re going so you can always backtrack if you get lost.

ATV Riders’ Etiquette

Sharing the trail with one of ‘those riders’ is never a pleasant experience! You know, those riders who hog the trail or blast past at full speed with zero regard for fellow adventurers.

There’s certain etiquette to be followed when negotiating a trail. Riders share the trails with everyone and they should act like it.

Follow proper right of way when encountering oncoming traffic. If you are continuing on, let other riders know how many people are coming behind you. If you are deferring, move over as far as you safely can. If you’ve encountered poor trail conditions, give a heads up to the passing riders. If someone is stopped on the side of the trail, lend them a helping hand. Usually, people just stop to take photos or a break. But sometimes you’ll find someone struggling with mechanical or medical issues who could use your assistance.
