Safety Tips For Riding Your Motorcycle Solo
Many motorcyclists enjoy riding in groups because of the shared camaraderie as well as the inherent safety to be found when amongst other people. It’s likely, though, that you’ll want to take off on a solo trip at some point. Traveling by yourself is extremely freeing and gives you the chance to explore in ways you just can’t when going as a group. There are no compromises and you can do whatever you like.
It’s important to keep safety in mind when traveling solo on your motorcycle since you won’t have the benefit of your fellow bikers to assist you or protect you. Here are some tips you can follow to keep yourself safe on the road.
1. Plan Your Route & Stay With It
While riding alone does offer you the opportunity to be more spontaneous, it’s helpful to establish a primary route to follow that you don’t deviate from too much. An interstate or major highway is always safer to travel on than a dirt or gravel road, or a smaller road that could leave you stranded somewhere.
2. Let Someone Know Where You’re Going
The nice thing about smartphones is that they allow us to remain in contact with others, even when we’re not close by. Use your phone to your advantage by giving someone your itinerary with expected stops and set up a check-in time each day where you send them a text to let them know you’re doing okay. You can still maintain your solitude this way while being responsible for your safety.
3. Pack Supplies
You should also make sure that you’ve packed the gear you’ll need to deal with issues while traveling. In addition to your clothing and toiletries, make sure you’ve got a first-aid kit and a toolkit with you to make repairs to yourself or your bike. Keep your phone charged up and ready to use in an emergency. Bring a waterproof poncho in case you’re caught in a downpour.
4. Ride With Caution
Avoid riding during the night if you possibly can; always try to stop somewhere by dusk so that you’re safely at a campground or in a hotel room for the night. Getting enough rest will also help you to be fresh and ready for the next day’s riding.
Make sure that you’re following posted speed limits and other signage when riding; don’t make any fast maneuvers or go over the speed limit. Remain vigilant on the highway, as other motorists may make unpredictable maneuvers.
When stopping for gas or rest, choose well-lit and well-populated gas stations and restaurants, rather than something shady and dark.
