There’s nothing wrong with taking your family to an RV park or a public campground, but some of us crave a bit more solitude as we experience the great outdoors. If that sounds like you, UTV camping will be right up your alley! Your UTV or side-by-side will get you to places other vehicles can’t go, and you can set up a cozy campsite wherever the mood suits you. Here’s a quick reference guide to roughing it in style with your UTV. Pack the Right Gear

In addition to all of the camping gear you want to bring, a side-by-side rooftop tent is a great way to spend your nights in comfort. The tents attach directly to your top rollbar and are available in a number of styles and configurations. Just be sure that the tent you purchase is designed to be used with your model of UTV. One slight drawback of rooftop tents is that they take up more cargo space than a conventional tent, but they're hard to beat when it comes to your comfort and protection from the elements.

You’ll definitely want to bring a cooler and plenty of water on every trip. 5-gallon collapsible jugs will allow you to carry as much water as you need, and they take up less space when they’re empty. If you don’t want to heat up your dinner on a campfire, be sure to also bring a portable stove and plenty of food. Be sure to also carry all of the tools and accessories that you’ll need and keep them in a convenient place.

Secure Your Gear Properly

Most UTVs have very limited rear storage space, and you’ll need some advanced planning and creativity to use the space wisely. Rooftop tents often use up all the space in your overhead roof rack, so you might consider pulling a trailer if you have a lot of gear. Just remember that a fully loaded side-by-side will handle much differently in rugged terrain and wet conditions.

Expect the Unexpected

The big appeal of UTV camping is fending for yourself in the wilderness, but most challenges and setbacks are predictable. Be sure your spare tire is in good condition, and carry a first aid kit and a jumpstart battery. Most importantly, be sure to download all the new maps and firmware for your GPS. Getting lost is much more fun when you know how to get back home after you explore!
